The California Medical Association did what?

In a ridiculous move...The California Medical Association released a white paper calling for the legalization of marijuana, this despite their own claims that marijuana has questionable value. Apparently the CMA has decided to cave in to pro pot supporters instead of doing what is in the best interest of the people of the state of California!

Dr. Donald Lyman, the Sacramento physician who wrote the CMA's new policy, attributed the shift to growing frustration over California's medical marijuana law, which permits cannabis use with a doctor's recommendation. That, he said, has created an untenable situation for physicians: deciding whether to give patients a substance that is illegal under federal law. "It's an uncomfortable position for doctors," he said. "It is an open question whether cannabis is useful or not. That question can only be answered once it is legalized and more research is done. Then, and only then, can we know what it is useful for."

Dr. Bertha Madras, from Harvard, calls the California Medical Association's White Paper...baloney. She asserts Donald Lyman's "justification" is a sham for these reasons:

1. The FDA does not approve medications to then assess their therapeutic efficacy and safety.

2. The legal status of marijuana has not interfered with research on its medical efficacy. The CMCR (the California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research) has had 11 years to investigate the therapeutic benefit of smoked marijuana and millions of dollars to support the research. They have failed to prove that smoked marijuana is beneficial for the conditions stated in the California ballot initiative, other than in neuropathic pain in flawed studies that used only experienced marijuana users as subjects.

3. "The untenable situation for physicians" is not untenable: Physicians with integrity who avail themselves of current scientific information and adhere to FDA approval process would not recommend marijuana. It is not approved by the FDA, does not reside in the pharmacopeia nor within medical education or within the boundaries of good medical practices.

4. Physicians who recommend marijuana are in fact violating Federal law and the FDA approval process. This is not a moral dilemma for physicians. The logical, scientific, ethical, moral decision is not to recommend it.

Don't buy the marijuana lie.

California Police Chiefs slam California Medical Association

Press release:

FROM CAL POLICE CHIEFS:
As many of you have likely read in your local papers, the California Medical Association recently released a white paper stating that marijuana should be legalized. We have responded with a formal press release, included below, and are continuing to respond to interview requests. We remain very engaged on this issue and will continue to keep you updated. We have posted the CMA white paper along with their release and our release on the Advocacy page of our website under Marijuana Legalization Issues.

Police Chiefs Strongly Oppose Medical Association’s Position on Marijuana The California Police Chiefs Association said today it “strongly opposes” the California Medical Association's recent announcement advocating the legalization of marijuana. It released the following statement from Chief David L. Maggard, Jr., president of the association’s board: “We are concerned and surprised by CMA’s recommendation to legalize marijuana. There isn’t even close to enough medical data illustrating the medicinal benefits to warrant legalization of this drug, especially when you consider the public safety and health risks associated with its use. It’s easy to see why legalizing marijuana is a bad idea. “Police officers witness the negative impact of marijuana usage on a daily basis in our communities and on our roads. There’s been a rise in the number of juveniles who are seeking treatment for addiction to the drug. We don’t see any positive outcomes from legalizing marijuana. “The federal government agrees. We applaud the recent decision to step up federal enforcement of illegal marijuana dispensaries.” The California Police Chiefs Association represents the state’s 336 municipal police chiefs whose agencies protect over 78 percent of the citizens of California.

Linda, the reason the FDA studies NEW DRUGS for years prior to approving them is BECAUSE THEY ARE NEW DRUGS! Marijuana is a natural, God-made plant. Nothing new about it. It's been used for centuries. New pharmaceuticals are combinations of newly developed chemicals that have to be tested for years to see if they are safe. The california physicians association sees what the vast majority of adults can see - that we allow adults to consume alcohol and tobacco(with their very addictive qualities and deadly side-effects) and it makes no sense to deprive those same adults of legally using a non-addictive substance with virtually no harmful side effects.

Following your logic, I guess we should all go out and buy a Willow tree and plant it in our yards, that way we don't have to buy aspirin anymore. We can just eat the bark. Hey... I have an even better idea...why not just smoke the bark! Whoohoo. A Willow tree is all natural and God made too!

To claim that marijuana is not addictive is one of the most bizarre claims I've heard legalizers make. It's intentionally deceptive.

All anyone has to do is to goggle search the words "Is marijuana addictive" and they will find over 23 million responses. You need to remember that legalizers have stacked the internet with page after page of nothing but garbage about marijuana and you have to do some digging to find the truth.

I have smoked marijuana off and on for over 35 years. Not addictive. What you will find out if you do some research, is that some people have what is psychologically called an "addictive personality". That means they can become easily "addicted" to anything they try. Beer, wine, tobacco, pot, chocolate, bubble baths.....

The whole point that reasonable people (legalizers to you) are trying to make is that adults are allowed to decide what to do with their bodies, what to ingest. Not have the government tell them what they can and cannot do. Alcohol and tobacco are tremendously harmful to individuals and society, yet they are completely legal. Do you think they should be outlawed, Linda?
